Meetup 050: Oh my darling, Poetry!

Last weekend, we had one of our phenomenal writers, Gouri Kapoor hosting a session on Poetry. She has always, always amazed us with what she pens. Her writing style is often idealistic, symbolic and profoundly poetic and that is what she brought to write club, this weekend too!

The Exercise:

Exercise 1: Pick a word and form an acrostic poem from it

An acrostic poem is a type of poetry where the first, last or other letters in a line spell out a particular word or phrase. The most common and simple form of an acrostic poem is where the first letters of each line spell out the word or phrase.

For example:

Exercise 2: Write a poem that is an outrageous metaphor for an every-day situation

For example:

In his poem A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning (Valediction), John Donne relates, in verse, his insights on the human condition of love and its relationship to the soul through the conceit of drawing compasses.

Donne brings the reader a separation of body and soul in his first stanza:

As virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say
The breath goes now, and some say, No;

All hail and all thanks to Gouri, we now do have a very good insight on some types of poetry and not just that, some of us also managed to master some of it!
